Under five lines
You are an account coordinator at a marketing agency.
Your agency's style guide tells staff to keep client emails under five lines, and you have always thought of your short emails as a strength. At your six-month review, your manager, Mrs. Dubois, has asked Karim, who mentors you, to join.
What's said in the scene
Mrs. Dubois: Our three biggest accounts asked for short emails. That's why the guide exists.
Karim: But one smaller client says yours feel cold. She's asked for someone else.
Mrs. Dubois: I can move her to Karim today. Or you call her and try again.
Karim: I'd rather you called. But it's your account, and your style.
The two questions
- 1What would you do about this client, and would you change anything about how you write?
- 2What do you do when something you consider a strength turns out to be a problem for someone else?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
