Scene to read · Self-awareness, Resilience

Two cups every Sunday

You are visiting your grandfather for the first time in two months.

After your grandmother died, you promised your grandfather Idris, 86, that you would visit every week. Then you took a weekend job to cover your tuition, and it has been two months. On his porch, your aunt Irene, who has visited him daily since, is with you both.

The scene

Idris: Young people are busy. No more promises, please. Come when you come.

Irene: Dad, you set out two cups every Sunday. Stop making excuses for people.

Idris: I'd rather have no promise than wait at the window for one.

Irene: I need my Sundays back. You said weekly. Keep it, or say you can't.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to your grandfather and your aunt?
  2. 2What should you do about a promise you made sincerely but can no longer keep in the way you meant it?
