Most balls lost
You play midfield for an adult recreational soccer team and think of yourself as its safest passer.
The team has started using a statistics app. After the match, at a clubhouse table with the rest of the squad within earshot, your coach, Harsh, slides the tablet across to you: it shows you have lost the ball more than anyone this season. Your teammate Zhen leans in.
The scene
Harsh: Guess who tops the giveaway chart. Most balls lost all season.
Zhen: To be fair, the app counts every missed long ball. You try the hard ones.
Harsh: True. Or the hard ones aren't working. I'd like you sitting deeper next week.
Zhen: The whole team's listening. Come on, safest passer, what's the verdict?
The two questions
- 1How would you respond, in front of the team?
- 2What makes it hard to accept evidence that contradicts how you see yourself?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
