Scene to read · Self-awareness, Communication
That was me last night
You work in an open-plan office.
Last night you spent three hours on an online forum arguing with a stranger about whether remote workers should be paid the same. You called their posts "lazy thinking"; they called you "an entitled child." This morning at your desk cluster, your coworker Khalid turns his chair toward you, and Taylor looks up from the next desk.
The scene
Khalid: So, 'lazy thinking.' That was me last night. I knew your username by midnight.
Taylor: Wait, you two were arguing online? About what?
Khalid: Remote pay. I gave as good as I got, to be fair.
Taylor: And you kept going after you knew? Wow. So who's apologizing first?
The two questions
- 1How would you respond to Khalid and Taylor?
- 2What does the way you argue with strangers online say about you, if anything?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
