Scene to read · Self-awareness, Professionalism

Anything to add?

You are a lab assistant in a hospital research lab.

Yesterday you told the lab manager, Vikram, that your coworker Linh left a batch of samples out overnight and spoiled them. This morning at the bench, in your probation month, you open the shared logbook and see your own initials: you took the batch out at 5:40 for labeling and never logged it back. Vikram and Linh are standing beside you.

The scene

Vikram: Forty samples lost, Linh. I've already reported it upstairs under your name.

Linh: I skipped the evening check. I'd have caught it. That's on me.

Vikram: Lucky it's you, honestly. For anyone on probation, this would be the end.

Vikram: So we're done, unless either of you has anything to add?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Vikram and Linh?
  2. 2Why is it sometimes harder to correct something you have said about another person than to admit a mistake that is only your own?

What raters look for
