Scene to read · Self-awareness, Collaboration
Whose version do you act on?
You lead a small project team that coordinates through a busy group chat.
Three weeks ago you muted the team channel to focus and forgot to unmute it, missing three requests from Gonzalo, who reports to you and redid a report on a guess. Your peer Samir has just told you the whole team assumed you were annoyed with them. Gonzalo arrives at your desk as Samir finishes.
The scene
Samir: Everyone thought you were annoyed with us. Apologize at Monday's team meeting.
Gonzalo: Everyone? Nobody else mentioned it to me. I just figured you were ignoring me.
Samir: People complain to me, not you, Gonzalo. A public word clears it.
Gonzalo: Then my three messages become the headline. Can we keep this between us?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Gonzalo and Samir, and what would you do about the rest of the team?
- 2How do you decide whose account to trust when people describe the effect of your behavior differently?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
