Scene to read · Self-awareness, Resilience
Do you have a shift in you?
You play on an adult recreational ice hockey team.
Your team has a rule that players call their own line changes when they are spent. You never do, and tonight, with only eight skaters, you stayed out too long and could not get back in time to stop the tying goal. On the players' bench, with four minutes left, your coach, Astrid, and your linemate Bao turn to you.
The scene
Astrid: Shifts are forty-five seconds for a reason. You were out there two minutes.
Bao: You never come off. We love it, but it just cost us one.
Astrid: Your line's up. If you sit, someone double-shifts. Do you have one in you?
Bao: I'll double if I have to. But I'm about done myself.
The two questions
- 1How would you answer Astrid, and why?
- 2Why can it be hard to admit you have reached your limit, and what are the costs of not admitting it?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
