Scene to read · Self-awareness, Empathy
Always so happy
You are having coffee with two close friends on a park café terrace.
You post online often, always about things going well, and have never mentioned that your own year has been hard. Naoko has just told you and Harleen, an older friend, that she lost her job four months ago and told nobody.
The scene
Naoko: I nearly told you in March. Then I saw your promotion post.
Harleen: Same here. Your page always looks perfect, so my problems felt tiny.
Naoko: It's not an accusation. Your page just never looks like a place for bad news.
Harleen: Is everything really so good? You can tell us. We're your friends.
The two questions
- 1How would you respond to Naoko and Harleen?
- 2How much do we owe the people close to us an honest picture of how we are doing?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
