Scene to read · Self-awareness, Empathy

Our side of the wall

You live in an apartment and start work at a bakery at five in the morning.

Yesterday you left a note complaining about your neighbors' evening music, which always stops by ten. Tonight you knocked to talk, and Jelani and his partner, Bogdan, answer the door. After two warnings at work for lateness, you keep a loud alarm across the room, on the wall you share with them.

The scene

Jelani: We got your note. Fair enough. Since we're trading notes, though, your alarm.

Bogdan: Four fifteen, every day, for a year. It's right behind our headboard.

Jelani: Music off at eight, if the alarm moves. Otherwise, I'd say we're even.

Bogdan: I recorded it. Want to hear our side before you answer?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Jelani and Bogdan?
  2. 2Why is it easier to notice how others affect us than how we affect them?

What raters look for

Self-awareness
Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
