Scene to read · Self-awareness, Motivation
Easy company, or longer waits
You are a companion-visit volunteer at a hospital, and you choose which visitors you are assigned to.
In the hospital volunteer lounge, coordinator Carmelina has a new visit list. Fellow volunteer Cassian, who has volunteered here for years, is beside her. You currently visit talkative patients, and the quieter patients on the list have waited longest for company.
The scene
Carmelina: The quiet patients have waited longest. Would you switch to them this month?
Cassian: Forced switches burn volunteers out. Ask what they can sustain, not what you need.
Carmelina: I'm not forcing anyone, but I'm short of options, and those visits matter too.
Cassian: Then it's their call. Silence wears people out. Better to know that now.
The two questions
- 1What would you decide about the switch, and what would you say to Carmelina and Cassian?
- 2How do you decide when to stay in your comfort zone and when to take on what is needed more?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
