Paint samples at eye level
You are a volunteer organizer leading your building's stairwell repainting vote, with authority to continue leading or hand the process over.
On the shared stairwell landing, you meet Junia, 32, and Jovana, 62, both neighbors. Your favorite paint sample is the only one taped at eye level, and voting has already started. You've handled the project’s scheduling and reminders; handing everything over could delay painting, but continuing unchanged could undermine neighbors' trust.
The scene
Junia: Your favorite is the only sample at eye level. That seems unfair.
Jovana: I'm tired of meetings, but you've kept this project moving so far.
Junia: Could someone else oversee voting while you handle getting the painting organized?
Jovana: I'd support that if they're available. Can we avoid another full meeting?
The two questions
- 1What would you do about the vote and your leadership role, and what would you say to Junia and Jovana?
- 2How do you decide whether to keep leading something when your own preference may be influencing the outcome?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
