Scene to read · Self-awareness, Empathy

The cheap one

You work in an office where the team goes out for lunch every Friday.

For months you have joked that your coworker Sade is cheap because she never joins the lunches; last week you said it in front of her. In the elevator lobby, your colleague Russell has just told you, in confidence, that she sends most of her pay to her family overseas. As he finishes, Sade walks up.

The scene

Russell: Hey, Sade. We're heading to the noodle place. Come with us for once?

Sade: Thanks, I brought lunch. Somebody has to be the cheap one around here.

Russell: That joke's worn out. We'd both say so, wouldn't we?

Sade: Don't. Honestly, the joke's easier than explaining myself. Enjoy your noodles.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Sade, now or later?
  2. 2Why do we judge other people's choices before we know their circumstances?

What raters look for

Self-awareness
Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
