Scene to read · Self-awareness, Resilience
Everything will be fine
You volunteer as a visitor guide at a hospital, walking worried families to the right ward.
You like to tell the people you guide that everything will be fine. Siti, a newer volunteer, has shadowed you all week. At the volunteer sign-in desk this morning, she and the coordinator, Dalia, are waiting for you.
The scene
Siti: That man told the nurses you promised his wife would be fine.
Dalia: And you know we never comment on outcomes.
Siti: It calmed him. I've copied you all week. Written up, I'm out.
Dalia: That depends what I hear. What exactly did you tell him, and how often?
The two questions
- 1How would you answer Dalia, and what would you do next?
- 2Why is it sometimes hard to see where being reassuring ends and overstepping begins?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
