Card out at the register
You are out for dinner with two old friends, and you are the one who always insists on paying.
At a restaurant's cashier desk, you have your card out, as you do every time you eat with your old friends Rei and Leandro. Rei, out of work since March, ordered the cheapest dish tonight and has put her hand over yours. Leandro, who grew up in Guadalajara and whose meals you covered during his own year without work, steps in.
The scene
Rei: Put that away, please. You always pay, and honestly, it makes me feel small.
Leandro: Ay, Rei, relax. In Guadalajara, friends don't split bills. Someone pays, with pleasure.
Rei: I'd rather split it. I was raised never to owe anyone, even friends.
Leandro: Nobody's counting, Rei. Okay, you decide. Whose card tonight?
The two questions
- 1What would you do at the register, and what would you say to Rei and Leandro?
- 2How can a generous habit affect other people in ways the generous person does not intend?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
