Scene to read · Self-awareness, Empathy
The year of the flood
You are visiting your parents and washing up after dinner.
At dinner you corrected the dates in one of your father Hector's stories, as you often do. In the kitchen your mother, Elena, has quietly told you he has nearly stopped telling stories when you visit, and asked you to let them be. Hector comes in to dry. The flood he mentions was in 1986, the date is on a hall photo, and his brother Luis was in that boat.
The scene
Hector: I'll dry. I'm telling the boat story at Luis's party Saturday. The '84 flood.
Elena: Luis will love that. He still talks about that boat.
Hector: In my day you didn't correct your father. But go on. Was it '84?
Elena: Well, you did ask, Hector.
The two questions
- 1How would you answer your father, and why?
- 2When does being right about something matter less than how the other person feels?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
