Medical School Interview Accommodations: How to Ask

How to request disability accommodations for an MMI or med school interview: when and whom to ask, Kira and Casper rules, and what eight US schools say.

Yes, you can ask for accommodations for a medical school interview, including the MMI. Write to the office the school names as soon as you are invited, say what you need for its format, and have documentation ready. Each school decides on its own. Casper and Acuity video interviews have their own forms and deadlines, weeks before the date.

This page covers published policies only, read October 19, 2026. It is not medical or legal advice. For what you need, talk with your own clinician or your college's disability office.

How to ask, step by step

  1. Ask as soon as the invitation comes. UCLA asks for requests after the invitation and UC San Diego says to write promptly. For a Casper or Acuity video interview, the cutoff is weeks before the date.
  2. Find the right office. The school's interview page or invitation names it. It is admissions at some schools and disability services at others. For a Kira interview, write to the school, and to Kira support if the platform itself is the barrier.
  3. Say what you need for the format. Name the format (MMI, one-on-one, virtual or in person) and the change you are asking for, such as added reading time, breaks between stations, captions or an interpreter.
  4. Have documentation ready. Ask what the office needs. Acuity wants a form completed in part by a qualified professional, and the AAMC judges its own exam requests on how a condition affects you now, not diagnosis alone.
  5. Get the plan in writing. Confirm the approved changes by email before the day, and ask who to contact if something goes wrong during the interview.

Acuity Insights says plainly that “The submission of a request does not guarantee the approval of an accommodation.” Schools review requests the same way, one at a time. Asking early leaves room to sort out details before the day.

What eight schools say

Each school's own admissions or disability page, read October 19, 2026. Under each name: degree and who to contact. Your invitation may give newer details, so check it first.

CHSU-COMDO, COM Student AffairsYou do not have to disclose the nature of a disability to the committee. Questions about its technical standards go to Student Affairs before the interview. Source

On disclosure and fairness, UNC writes “Disclosure is not required.” and CHSU-COM writes “Every applicant is considered without regard to disability.”

Kira Talent and Acuity Insights

Many MMIs and video assessments run on Kira Talent, and Casper runs on Acuity Insights. Each has its own rules, and both send dates and deadlines back to the school. Kira says “These requests must go directly to the school or program you are applying to.” If the platform itself is the barrier, its support team “will connect with the school on your behalf to find a solution that works for you.”

Kira Talent: what its help center says
  • Built-in features. Closed captions on recorded video, zoom up to 200%, keyboard navigation and audio notices for timed questions that work with screen readers. Source
  • Live interviews. Kira says its live interviews are not yet fully WCAG 2.1 AA compliant, because they lack captions. Source
  • If you need more. Contact Kira support if you usually receive accommodations. Its team connects with the school for you. Source
  • Deadlines and dates. Kira cannot extend deadlines, grant retakes or move a live interview. Those go to the school. Source
Acuity Insights (Casper): how to request
  • What to send. The Accommodations Request Form, Part 1 from you and Part 2 from a qualified professional, plus supporting documents such as medical reports or professional evaluations. Source
  • When. At least four weeks before your Casper date. For Acuity video interviews, at least two weeks before, or as soon as possible. Source
  • What is often approved. Additional time, assistive software such as speech-to-text or a screen reader, and assistive personnel such as a scribe or reader. Source
  • Cost. The review and format changes such as added time are free. Software and personnel such as a scribe are arranged by you, at your expense. Source
  • How long it lasts. Until July 31 two calendar years after the approval year, so a 2026 approval lasts until July 31, 2028. Source

Acuity also says “All accommodation requests for Acuity Insights Assessments are reviewed case by case”, and that your accommodation status and documents are “not shared with academic programs”. Its list of approved options is on its accommodations page, the validity rules are on its validity page, and the full rules are in the Acuity Insights Accommodations Policy.

Extra time in the MMI

You can ask for it. None of the eight schools above publishes a fixed list of MMI changes, so each one decides what works in its format. For its own assessments, Acuity lists additional time among the most often approved accommodations. It also lists “Extra time for slow typing: Unless related to a diagnosed disability or condition” among changes that are not needed or allowed.

For its own exams, the AAMC says “it is your current functional limitations (in combination with the demands of the task you will be undertaking), not diagnosis alone, that determines the appropriateness of the requested accommodation.” Framing a school request the same way, around what the format asks of you, makes it easier to act on. If the interview is online, our virtual MMI guide explains how stations and timers work on Zoom and Kira. Kira notes that “Live interviews are not yet fully WCAG 2.1 AA compliant, due to the lack of captions.”

What interviewers should not ask

Asking for an accommodation is between you and the office that handles it. In the interview itself, the AAMC's interview guidance lists “Do you have any disabilities?” and “Will you require special accommodations?” under “Examples of inappropriate questions”. If you are asked, you can steer back to your experiences and report it to the school afterward.

If nerves are part of what you are planning for, our interview anxiety guide covers what helps before and during the day. Rehearsing the format out loud, at your own pace, also takes some of the surprise away.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get accommodations for a medical school interview?

Yes, you can ask. Schools such as UCLA, UNC, Rutgers Health and UChicago Pritzker say on their own pages how to request accommodations for the interview. Each school decides on its own, so contact the office it names once you are invited.

Can I get extra time in the MMI?

You can ask for it. None of the eight school pages here lists set MMI changes, so the school decides what fits its format. Acuity Insights lists additional time among its most often approved accommodations for its own assessments, such as Casper.

How do I request accommodations on Kira Talent?

Contact Kira support if you usually receive accommodations or the platform is a barrier. Kira says its team connects with the school for you. Deadline extensions and new interview dates come from the school, not Kira.

Do I have to disclose ADHD or another disability to a medical school?

Not to apply. UNC says disclosure is not required, and Rutgers Health says you need not disclose at the application stage unless you need accommodations then. The AAMC lists asking whether you have a disability as an inappropriate interview question.

How far ahead should I ask?

As early as you can. Acuity wants Casper requests at least four weeks before your test and video interview requests at least two weeks before. Schools ask you to write once you have your invitation. Casper test dates and registration.
