Whose watering counts more
You are a third gardener at the community garden, and a friend to both Zenaida and Zeno.
On Saturday morning at the community garden, Zenaida and Zeno stand beside the plot they share. Zenaida waters every day, while Zeno comes for the big seasonal jobs like turning soil and building trellises. The beans are wilting and the weeds are winning. Both ask what you think.
The scene
Zenaida: I'm here every morning with the watering can. Nobody sees that work.
Zeno: I built the beds and hauled the compost. That's the heavy lifting.
Zenaida: Heavy lifting twice a year doesn't keep tomatoes alive in July, though.
Zeno: Fine. Should we set a strict schedule, or agree on a goal?
The two questions
- 1What would you suggest to Zenaida and Zeno, and why?
- 2How do you decide when a group needs clear rules for fairness and when a shared goal is enough?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
