Scene to read · Communication, Ethics

Was it because of me?

You are a regular player in the Saturday pickup basketball group, and both Dorothea and Eamon trust your judgment.

After a pickup run on an outdoor court, Eamon, 34, the game organizer, is packing the ball bag with Dorothea, 64, a longtime regular. You participated in the discussion about shortening games to reduce waiting between turns and address slower play, including hers. Dorothea wasn't included in that discussion and now asks about the change.

The scene

Dorothea: Eamon, did we switch to shorter games because of my play?

Eamon: Pace was part of it, but shorter games also reduce waiting.

Dorothea: Then tell me straight. Was I slowing everyone down out here?

Eamon: I don't want you feeling excluded. Can you help explain this?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Dorothea and Eamon, and why?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you had to answer an honest question when the truthful answer might hurt someone. How did you handle it?
