I caught half
You are the shop assistant at a family-run optician's.
At the fitting table, Jyoti, the optician who trained you, is explaining lens care to Deja, a customer who is hard of hearing. Jyoti talks quickly while facing the lens tray, then steps to the till a few feet away, and Deja turns to you.
The scene
Jyoti: So rinse first, never dry-wipe, and come back in two weeks for the coating check.
Deja: Yes. Fine. Two... yes, thank you.
Jyoti: Lovely. Four more fittings are waiting, so I'll ring you up.
Deja: I caught half. Please don't tell her, dear. I'll manage, I always do.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Deja and to Jyoti?
- 2When someone asks you not to make a fuss on their behalf, how do you decide whether to respect that?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
