Scene to read · Communication, Empathy
Not a real career
You are at a hiking summit with two close friends.
Your friend Seung left an office job last year to run a small dog-grooming van. For the third hike in a row, your other friend, Sione, has joked about it. Seung has never said whether it bothers him.
The scene
Sione: And how's the hobby going? Still calling the van a career?
Seung: Yep. Still washing dogs. Nice view up here.
Sione: You know I'm kidding. Mostly. I just hate seeing that degree wasted.
Seung: It's fine. Really. Can we just enjoy the view?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, now or later, and why?
- 2How do you decide whether to speak up for someone who has not asked you to?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
