Heavy crates go under
You are helping your close friend Madhuri pack up her produce stall at the farmers market.
This morning Madhuri learned that her stall is losing its spot after six years. As you stack crates, she snaps at you in front of Henrik, the vendor from the next stall, who is folding his awning.
The scene
Madhuri: Not like that! Heavy crates go under. How many times must I say it? Useless.
Henrik: Easy, Madhuri. Your friend gave up a Saturday for this.
Madhuri: Six years here, and gone by the first. I don't need a lecture.
Henrik: Fair enough. Rough day. You okay over there, though?
The two questions
- 1How would you respond in this moment, and why?
- 2How do you decide whether to tell a friend they have hurt you right away or to wait for a better time?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
