You are folding laundry at a laundromat with two close friends on a Sunday afternoon.

Over the past two weeks your friend Kenji has posted online several times calling himself a hopeless failure. At the folding table, with your other friend Bilal beside you, you have just asked him about the posts.

The scene

Kenji: Those? That's just my sense of humor. People love it, I got sixty likes.

Bilal: See, all in fun. Let's not make laundry day weird, okay?

Kenji: Honestly, it's nothing. I lost the job, I make jokes. That's how I cope.

Bilal: Exactly. So we're dropping it, right?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say next, and would you bring it up with Kenji again?
  2. 2How do you tell the difference between respecting someone's wish to change the subject and avoiding a conversation that matters?

What raters look for

Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
