Nobody blinks at a hundred
You are planning a group wedding gift with two close friends at a café.
You, Mohan and Anders are organizing a nine-hundred-dollar gift from nine friends. Yesterday one of the nine told you privately that she has lost her job and cannot pay a hundred dollars, and asked you not to tell anyone.
The scene
Anders: Nine of us, a hundred each, done. Nobody's going to blink at a hundred.
Mohan: Agreed. You've got everyone's numbers, so we need you to send it.
Anders: Tonight, if you can. The deposit's due Friday.
Mohan: You look unsure. Is a hundred a problem for somebody?
The two questions
- 1How would you answer Mohan, and what would you do about the request?
- 2How can a group make plans that cost money without putting anyone in an awkward position?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
