The only printed list
You work for an estate-sale company that sells through an online auction site.
Pauline, the coworker who trained you, arrived an hour after today's pickup window opened with the only printed list of winning bidders. You spent that hour apologizing to buyers in the parking lot. Emilio, a buyer, has waited the whole time.
The scene
Pauline: Well, the cavalry's here! Nobody melted, did they? Who's first?
Emilio: I took an hour off work for this. What actually went wrong?
Pauline: Oh, it was just one of those mornings. We're a small outfit, it happens.
Emilio: I'm asking your colleague. Will it happen again next pickup?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Emilio, and what would you say to Pauline, now or later?
- 2When is it right to give a colleague honest feedback in front of other people?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
