Scene to read · Communication, Self-awareness

Everyone but the cook

You gave the toast at your parents' fortieth anniversary dinner.

You thanked everyone by name except your sister-in-law, Beatrix, who cooked most of the meal. The guests are still at the table in the next room. At the kitchen sink, Beatrix is rinsing plates beside your brother, Walter, when you come in.

The scene

Walter: You thanked the florist by name. Not one word for two days of cooking.

Beatrix: It's fine, Walter. Honestly. It was a lovely toast.

Walter: It's not fine. Twenty people out there have no idea you made that dinner.

Beatrix: And I'd hate being marched out for applause. So what happens now?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Beatrix and Walter, and what would you do next?
  2. 2When should an apology be made in public, and when is a private one better?
