The closing shift

You are shopping at a thrift store with a group of friends on a Saturday afternoon.

Sialei is organizing a birthday dinner for your mutual friend Jo next Friday. Last week Fang told you she had that Friday off. Outside the fitting rooms, with an armful of clothes each, Sialei asks who is coming.

The scene

Fang: I can't do Friday, I'm so sorry. I'm stuck on the closing shift.

Sialei: Again? You missed her last birthday too. Jo's going to notice.

Fang: I know. I'll make it up to her, I swear.

Sialei: You two talk every day. Did you know about this shift?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you answer Sialei?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it acceptable to go along with a friend's excuse that you suspect is not true?
