Scene to read · Communication, Ethics
Our kids, our rules
You are looking after your cousin's two children for the weekend.
Your cousin Tane, who is also one of your closest friends, and his husband, Tariq, are leaving for a weekend away; the children are inside. The kids ride only on the quiet cul-de-sac out front, and Mika, the older one, refused to ride for a year after classmates teased him about his helmet. In the garage, beside the bicycle rack where two helmets hang, he gives you his last instructions.
The scene
Tane: In the cul-de-sac, no helmets. I've watched a lot of videos. They ride more carefully.
Tariq: And Mika only started riding again once the helmet came off.
Tane: Our kids, our rules, even when we're away. Can you do that?
Tariq: I go back and forth myself, honestly. Would you be okay with it?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Tane and Tariq before they leave?
- 2When you care for someone else's children, how far should you follow instructions you disagree with?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
