A note on the kettle

You share an old family cabin boat with your relatives.

Your older brother Imran has taped chore lists and pointed notes around the boat's cabin, and since then the deck gets rinsed and the cooler emptied. Your cousin Nancy says everyone now eats ashore to avoid him. In the galley, an hour before the rest of the family arrives at the marina, both turn to you.

The scene

Nancy: There's a note on the kettle, Imran. The kettle. People are eating ashore to avoid you.

Imran: Before the notes, I scrubbed this boat alone every single Sunday.

Nancy: Nobody's saying don't ask. Just ask us, don't post it like a warning.

Imran: I did ask, for two summers. So, do the notes come down or not?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Imran and Nancy?
  2. 2Why do written reminders sometimes cause more friction than the problem they are meant to solve?

What raters look for
