Scene to read · Communication, Problem solving
The lake in August
You are folding laundry at a laundromat with two close friends, Nadia and Hiroshi.
Four months ago you paid the campsite fees and rental car for a group trip. Hiroshi paid you back that week. Nadia still owes you two hundred dollars and changes the subject whenever you bring it up when the two of you are alone.
The scene
Nadia: Okay, hear me out. Same crew, the lake in August. Cabins this time, not tents.
Hiroshi: I'm in. Cabins go fast, though. Somebody has to book this week.
Nadia: You could put it on your card again, right? We'll sort it out later.
Hiroshi: Works for me. You've gone quiet, though. Is that okay?
The two questions
- 1What would you say, and would you say it now or later?
- 2What makes it hard to talk about money with friends, and how do you decide when to raise it?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
