Three names or a typo?

You are in your first week selling cars at a small used car lot.

On Tuesday you typed up title paperwork for a hatchback and listed three previous owners, though you rushed and never double-checked against the original. Now, beside the car, the lot's owner, Ignacio, is closing a sale with Zola, a buyer who wears hearing aids. Ignacio has told her the car had one careful owner.

The scene

Zola: You're the one who typed this car's paperwork, right? It lists three owners.

Ignacio: That's a first-week typo. Our history report shows one owner. Easy mistake.

Zola: I'd rather hear it from you. Did you get it wrong?

Ignacio: Go on, be honest with her. Did you copy that title carefully?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Zola, with Ignacio standing there?
  2. 2How do you decide whether to admit a possible mistake when you aren't sure you made one?
