Scene to read · Communication, Motivation
One good week
You are visiting a state park with your father, Riley, and your younger sister, Wendy.
Wendy is in her second year of an accounting degree. She has just spent a week shadowing a park ranger she admires and talks about little else. At a picnic table outside the visitor center, she makes an announcement.
The scene
Wendy: I'm leaving accounting to be a ranger. This week I finally felt awake.
Riley: One good week, with a great mentor. You haven't seen February out here.
Wendy: And you've never seen me this happy. Doesn't that count?
Riley: It counts. So does two years of tuition. Back me up here, please.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Wendy and to your father?
- 2How can you tell the difference between supporting someone's dream and telling them what they want to hear?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
