Scene to read · Communication, Professionalism

It was all in the talk

You are a new activities assistant at a care home, one week into the job.

Your supervisor, Manoj, has just given relatives a patio talk on the new visit sign-up system, and several left looking puzzled. In the garden, Layla, whose husband lives here, stops you both.

The scene

Layla: I'm sorry, I still don't follow. Do I book Sunday online or call?

Manoj: It was all in the talk, Layla. The printed guide gets mailed Friday.

Layla: Friday comes after Sunday. You were listening, dear. Can't you just tell me?

Manoj: I'd rather not have two versions going around. The guide will settle it.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Layla and to Manoj?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it right for the newest person in a workplace to tell a supervisor that something did not land?
