Personal question · Communication, Resilience

Not how you meant it

A text, an email or a post in a group chat can come across as cold, angry or sarcastic when the writer meant nothing of the kind. Once you learn how it landed, you can defend what you wrote, raise it openly, or leave it alone and hope it fades.

The two questions

  1. 1Tell us about a message you wrote that was read very differently from how you meant it. When you found out, what pulled you toward letting it pass or defending your wording, and what pulled you toward raising it openly?
  2. 2Describe the choice you made, what it cost or repaired, and whether you would handle it the same way now.

What raters look for

Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
Resilience
Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
