Personal question · Communication, Empathy

Hard to say, hard to hear

Honest feedback is hard to give and hard to receive. How we word it matters, and so does noticing how the other person is taking it. Think of a time with a friend, family member or group when you had to say, or hear, something difficult.

The two questions

  1. 1Describe a time you gave a friend or someone close to you honest feedback they did not want to hear. How did you decide what to say and how to say it, and how did you notice how they were feeling as you spoke?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you received honest feedback that was hard to hear and noticed how you or the person giving it felt. What did that change about how you responded, and what would you do differently now?

What raters look for

Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
