Scene to read · Communication, Ethics
We promised her
You are doing laundry with two close friends, Gregor and Tyrone.
At the laundromat folding table on a Saturday afternoon, Gregor and Tyrone tell you that Nell, a friend of all three of you, confided to them that her family is about to lose their home. She has not told you herself.
The scene
Tyrone: If ten of us chip in by the first, Nell's family keeps the house.
Gregor: She asked us not to tell anyone. We promised her.
Tyrone: And we watch them get evicted over a promise?
Gregor: She'd be mortified if everyone knew. Okay, you tell us. Do we say something or not?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Gregor and Tyrone, and what do you think the three of you should do?
- 2When, if ever, is it right to share something told in confidence in order to help the person who told it?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
