Record the book club?

You are the host of a neighborhood book club holding a hybrid meeting from your living room.

Book-club members Seamus, 29, and Selene, 42, are with you in your living room before the video call starts in two minutes. Selene wants to record the discussion for members who cannot attend. Seamus mentioned earlier that he likes to speak freely; he has not objected to recording, but seems unsure.

The scene

Selene: Three members are traveling tonight. Recording lets them catch up later.

Seamus: That's thoughtful. I'm blunt about books when nobody's keeping a copy.

Selene: Only members would see it. I'd hate anyone feeling left out.

Seamus: I'd prefer no recording, but I don't want to exclude anyone.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do before the meeting starts, and how would you ask Seamus and the others about recording?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to make sure someone could say no to something without feeling pressured.
