Scene to read · Communication, Ethics

Through the window

You are about to walk into a retirement party with two close friends.

The party is for a former teacher of yours. In the hallway outside the banquet room, Ari rehearses his toast, built on a funny story about her getting locked out on a field trip. You were there, and most of it did not happen that way. Her family and old colleagues are inside, and Ghada is listening with you.

The scene

Ari: ...and she climbs in through the window, in front of forty kids! Good, right?

Ghada: It's hilarious. Okay, she used the door. Nobody fact-checks a toast.

Ari: It's affectionate. Everyone stretches a story. She'll laugh hardest of all.

Ghada: Two minutes, Ari. Unless our eyewitness here has notes?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Ari before he goes in?
  2. 2When is embellishing a story harmless, and when does it become a problem?
