Scene to read · Communication, Empathy
Did I get it?
You supervise the bookkeepers at a small tax-prep office.
It is after closing. The owner, Folasade, chose another bookkeeper for the senior preparer role and its raise, and planned to tell Winona with you tomorrow. In the back room, Winona, who signed a pricier lease last week counting on the raise, has stopped you both.
The scene
Winona: Did the senior preparer raise come through? I signed my new lease counting on it.
Folasade: It's nine at night, Winona. We'll sit down properly tomorrow morning.
Winona: If it were good news, you'd just say it.
Winona: You wrote my review. Did I get it?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Winona right now, and why?
- 2What makes difficult news easier, or harder, to hear from the person delivering it?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
