Scene to read · Communication, Empathy
Forty relatives
You are visiting your aunt Neha and your uncle Reza at your parents' home.
On your parents' sofa, your uncle Reza, 64, shows you an article on his tablet that he has shared with the family group of forty relatives. It praises a spice mix his mother made, which is harmless, but adds that some readers "needed less heart medication," which doctors don't support. Since retiring, Reza has felt sidelined at family events. Your aunt Neha, 68, sits beside him, his cane against the armrest.
The scene
Reza: My mother made this mix for fifty years. It's wisdom, not nonsense.
Neha: The spices are fine. That last line could make someone skip their medicine.
Reza: In our family, the young don't correct elders in front of everyone.
Neha: Reza, you brush me off every time. But you always listen to this one.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Reza?
- 2Describe a time you had to tell someone you care about that they had something wrong. How did you approach it?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
