Scene to read · Communication, Empathy
Since lunchtime
You drive the courtesy cart between a hospital's parking garage and its main entrance.
At the entrance stop, Yan waves you down. She has been waiting since lunchtime for the accessible van booked to take her mother home, and the transport office keeps telling her it is on its way. An hour ago, on the cart radio, you heard that van being sent to another pickup. Your supervisor, Tala, is riding with you.
The scene
Yan: At lunch they said it was on its way. It's four now. Is it coming?
Tala: I'm sorry, we only run the cart. The transport office handles vans.
Yan: They just keep saying soon. You have a radio. Don't you hear things?
Tala: Half of what's on that radio changes. We're not the ones to say.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Yan, and what would you do?
- 2What can you offer someone when the thing they need is outside your role?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
