Write 'members' on the box
You are helping sort donations for a winter coat drive in your parents' basement.
The cultural association your family helped found is collecting coats, advertised as being for newly arrived families. Your aunt Ayana will hand them out tomorrow. Upstairs a minute ago your mother, Sunita, quietly asked you to talk to Ayana, because Ayana listens to you. Now the three of you are sorting.
The scene
Ayana: Warmest ones in this box. Our own people first, then the newcomers.
Sunita: The flyer did say new families. Well. The organizers can sort it out tomorrow.
Ayana: Three of our families have no heat this winter. Twenty years they've given here.
Ayana: Write 'members' on this box for me. You've got the marker.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Ayana?
- 2How do you disagree with an older relative about fairness without dismissing the experience behind their view?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
