Scene to read · Empathy, Resilience

She won't say it herself

You are a close friend of both Zoltan and Zora, sitting with them in a late-night diner booth.

Zoltan, 44, and Zora, 57, have been close friends for years. Recently, Zoltan has spent most free evenings with a new coworker and seems unaware that their usual plans have fallen away. Zora privately told you she feels left out but doesn't want to sound needy.

The scene

Zoltan: Sorry I've been scarce. My coworker keeps inviting me out after work.

Zora: It's fine. I'm glad you're making friends. I'm just tired tonight.

Zoltan: Come Saturday, then. You'll like her, and everyone's welcome to join us.

Zora: Maybe. I miss our quieter evenings, but I don't want to complain.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say or do in this moment, and why?
  2. 2How do you decide when to speak up on a friend's behalf and when to let them speak for themselves?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Resilience
Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
