Scene to read · Empathy, Ethics

Don't call my sister

You are close friends with Rukhsana and Eko.

For months Rukhsana has trained twice a day and often skips meals. She has lost weight, but none of you knows whether anything is actually wrong, and she says her coach approves her plan. After a morning jog, the three of you sit on the bleachers by the running track.

The scene

Eko: You skipped breakfast again. I'm worried. I think your sister should know.

Rukhsana: I'm training for a race, Eko. I'm fine. Please, everyone back off.

Eko: You said that in March, and you've gotten thinner. We can't just watch.

Rukhsana: Promise me you two won't call her. Promise?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Rukhsana and Eko?
  2. 2Describe a time you were worried about someone who insisted they were fine. What did you do?
