Scene to read · Empathy, Self-awareness
The ride is still running
You are a close friend of Fraser, standing in your apartment doorway as he asks you for a favor.
Fraser stands at your door with a packed duffel bag; a car idles at the curb behind him. He stopped answering your messages a year ago, but two years ago he spent a weekend helping you move across the state. Hadiza, your partner, shares the lease and stands beside you.
The scene
Fraser: I went quiet a year, and I'm sorry. Can I crash?
Hadiza: Two weeks is a lot, Fraser. I'm not sure how I feel.
Fraser: I get that. But I helped you move, remember? My ride's leaving.
Hadiza: I'm not saying no. I just wish we'd heard first.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Fraser and Hadiza before the ride pulls away, and why?
- 2Describe a time you felt you owed someone a favor and had to decide how far that obligation should go.
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
