Written scenario · Empathy, Ethics

Before he starts flying

You are visiting the flight school your closest friend is about to attend.

Your closest friend Lorenzo starts commercial pilot training next month. In the parking lot after a tour, he admits he has been relying more and more on painkillers left over from an old prescription to get through the day. He says he is scared, that he means to stop before training begins, and that you are the only person he has told. He begs you to tell no one: the program would drop him, and he has saved for four years to get in. Within weeks he will be flying with instructors, and later with passengers.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Lorenzo, and what would you do?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it right to break a promise of confidentiality to a close friend?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
