Scene to read · Empathy, Communication

Ten more scratch-offs

You are on a road trip with your close friends Yasmin and Paige.

The three of you pay for gas from a shared envelope of cash. At the fourth gas stop, beside the lottery ticket counter, Yasmin has just bought another stack of scratch-off tickets with money from the envelope.

The scene

Yasmin: Ten more. I'm down four hundred this month, so I'm due. That's just math.

Paige: Just top the envelope back up by Thursday. It's vacation, relax.

Yasmin: Obviously. It's twenty bucks. Why are you both looking at me like that?

Paige: Nobody is. Right? Tell her we're fine and let's go.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Yasmin and Paige, and when?
  2. 2Describe a time you were worried about a friend's habit or choices. How did you decide whether to say something?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
