Scene to read · Empathy, Communication
Everyone's here today
You are a close friend of Kenneth and have driven him to his family's backyard barbecue.
Kenneth came out to you last month and has not told his family. You are sitting together in your parked car outside the barbecue when his cousin Jomar, who knows and supports him, leans in at the window.
The scene
Jomar: Your mom keeps asking me what's wrong. Tell them today. I'll be beside you.
Kenneth: If Dad goes quiet in front of everyone, I won't recover.
Jomar: She'll guess soon anyway. Better she hears it from you.
Kenneth: Please, just say we have to leave early. Back me up.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Kenneth and Jomar?
- 2Tell us about a time you supported someone through a decision that was theirs to make. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
