Scene to read · Empathy, Resilience
One person on my side
You are at a gym café with two friends after a workout.
Your friend Bernard learned this morning that the promotion he had worked toward for four years went to someone hired in March. Your other friend, Ari, has been offering him advice since the locker room.
The scene
Bernard: Four years, and she picks the guy hired in March. Say it. She's a fool.
Ari: Ask for written feedback. Then update your résumé. I'll help tonight.
Bernard: I don't want a plan, Ari. I want one person on my side.
Ari: Where I grew up, that means fixing it. Back me up here.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Bernard and to Ari?
- 2Tell us about a time someone needed your support and you had to work out what kind of support they actually wanted.
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
