Scene to read · Ethics, Equity

Acting clueless

You are in a campus library study room with two other students, registering for next term.

Your close friend Gang, who has worked as a paid software developer for four years, is signing up for the beginners' programming class, where only the top fifth of students get an A. Your classmate Nnamdi has just said he needs an A in it to keep his scholarship.

The scene

Gang: I'm taking it too. I'll act clueless and collect an easy A.

Nnamdi: Only the top fifth get an A. Yours comes out of somebody's. Maybe mine.

Gang: It's required for my degree, and nothing says I can't. My average needs it.

Nnamdi: No, yeah. It's allowed. Forget I said anything.

The two questions

  1. 1Would you say anything to Gang? If so, what?
  2. 2Is using an advantage you already have ever unfair to others, if no rule is broken?

What raters look for

Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
