Written scenario · Ethics, Self-awareness

An essay you proofread

You are a graduate teaching assistant with a stack of first-year history essays to mark.

Halfway down the stack is an essay on medieval river trade that is nearly identical to one your close friend wrote last year; you know because you proofread it. It was submitted by Javier, your friend's younger brother, an adult in your tutorial group who writes in his second language and has been struggling. Markers are expected to send suspected copying to the integrity office, where the usual result is a failed course. You do not know whether your friend handed the essay over or Javier took it, and a referral may pull your friend in too.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and why?
  2. 2Describe a time your loyalty to a friend pulled against what you thought was right. What did you do?

What raters look for

Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
Self-awareness
Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
